The Sound of Music and The Selfish Giant Auditions

The Diocesan Arts Ministry is pleased to announce that the North Shore mountains will be alive with The Sound of Music in 2014! The team which produced Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is partnering with St. John the Evangelist and the other Anglican / Lutheran churches of the North Vancouver Region to put together a new production of the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical.

Auditions will be held at St. John’s on January 11th 2014, and at St. Philip’s in Dunbar on January 18th from 12pm – 4pm. We are looking to build a cast of adults, teenagers and children to build a great intergenerational production. No experience necessary! The cast will work together as a community to develop each other’s skills. Rehearsals will be held each week on Saturday afternoons, and the performances will be across the final week of May 2014!

We are also building a back stage crew and we would love to hear from you if you have gifts to offer in SETS, COSTUMES, LIGHTING, SOUND and FRONT OF HOUSE.

To book an audition, or to offer your back stage talents, get in touch with the producers at: anglican.arts@gmail.com

Gifts Discernment Workshop October 19

North Vancouver Region
(Anglican and Lutheran)
Gifts Discernment Workshop

What is God calling me to do and be at this point in my life?  How do I best use my experience and talents for service in the church and/or the world?  What is my unique purpose in life?

Are you asking these kinds of questions? Part of a healthy spiritual life is a periodic inventory to identify our own particular talents and determine how to use them well. This workshop will give participants resources and an opportunity to explore these questions.

In a recent Anglican Journal article, Andrew Stephens-Rennie, national youth staff person for the Anglican Church, said the church needs to challenge us to authentically live our faith in daily life, “to inspire (us) to a renewed sense of God’s call, and a vision of what that might look like, today.“
This workshop will provide one way for this to begin for you.
Who: Ages 16 and up.
This is not for people experiencing a call to ordination, but for any baptized person seeking to name and honour who they are. If you are in some kind of transition in your life, may will find this helpful. If you are restless, bored or frustrated in your life, this may inspire renewed energy for you.

When: Saturday October 19  9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Where: St. Clement’s Anglican Church
Cost: $5.00 for supplies  (free for students)
Register: Call Yvonne at 604-988-4418
Leadership: The Venerable Lynne McNaughton, The Rev. Stephen Muir.

Katharine Jefferts Schori (Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church of the USA) challenged us at the Joint Assembly 2013:

Get up, Get out, Get lost, in God’s mission for the world”

Community Service Opportunity

St. Catherine's  & Gloria Dei are hosting a Community Thanksgiving Dinner at St. Catherine's on Saturday, October 12 in the evening. There may be over 200 people attending this dinner.

The organizers are asking for youth and young adult volunteers to help out by waiting tables. Serving starts at 6pm and you should remember to eat before arriving. Things should wind up by about 8:30pm.

Please let me know if you are interested in participating in this opportunity to connect with people in North Vancouver.

Fall Youth Event

We are scheduled to hold a Fall youth Event!

Who: Youth of all ages
What: Dinner, games, worship, & pumpkin carving
Where: St. Catherine's Anglican Church
When: Sunday, October 27th from 4pm until 6:30
Why: to get to know one another
How: each parish will be responsible for contributing to the evening

We will start at 4pm with some Ice-Breakers & Getting-To-Know-You Games.
We'll have a competition to Name the North Vancouver Regional Youth Ministry.
We'll have Dinner at 5pm.
We'll have an Evening Prayer Service at 6pm and then go home!

We need each church to volunteer to provide for different aspects of the afternoon. Volunteers can be parents, youth, and/or other interested parties. There are seven jobs and seven churches so that works out nicely.

We need:
dinner (maybe spaghetti & sauce)
salads
dessert (fruit? pumpkin pie? cookies?)
beverages (juice? milk? maybe no pop?)
set-up (maybe St. Catherine's should take this on as the host church)
clean-up
pumpkins for carving

Food should mostly be prepared in the kitchen at the church. We will have access earlier in the afternoon if necessary.

I (Rev. Andrew Halliday) have, as of October 1, received only partial contact information for the youth in the region. This means that clergy and youth leaders (and other interested parties) must take responsibility for contacting the youth in their churches. Put it in the leaflet! Make some phone calls! Send some texts! I will create a poster and drop one off at each parish in the next week.

This is so exciting! I can't wait to get everyone in the same room at the same time.

Urgent Request from Mount Olivet Church

EMERGENCY SWEATER DRIVE
FOR SYRIAN REFUGEES

As the devastation of the Syrian civil war continues to unfold, refugees living at the Za’atari refugee camp are bracing themselves for another harsh winter.  A housing shortage, lack of appropriate clothing and a demanding climate can make life extremely difficult for families that have fled the violence.  At the request of our partners, Canadian Lutheran World Relief will be dispatching a second shipment to support Syrian refugees living in Jordan, and we need your help.

Our goal is to gather 10,000+ sweaters this fall and dispatch them in time for winter.  Sweaters of all sizes are needed, for men, women and children.

We at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in North Vancouver encourage everyone to help us reach this goal.

We are asking you for new and gently used sweaters that are cleaned.  You can gather the sweaters (mens, womens and childrens) place them in a box with your name on the front of the box and drop them off at Mt. Olivet Lutheran church.

Where:
Mt. Olivet Lutheran church, 1700 Mountain Highway, North Vancouver
Time:
The church is open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 9:00 a.m. until 12:00
Or you may leave your box outside under the canopy on the parking lot side of the church.

Mt. Olivet will rebox, properly supply shipping labels and deliver to home hardware.  Home hardware then takes care of getting the shipment to the Lutheran World Relief’s warehouse in Winnipeg and they are responsible for getting it to “Za’atari refugee camp.  All boxes must get to the warehouse no later than October 31st.

Note:  all sweaters must be delivered to the church by October 20th at the latest******

Today, your help is needed again to provide warmth and dignity for those who have survived unspeakable hardships.  Together we will make a difference.

Calling all knitters! Prayer Shawls for Residential School Survivors

At the Truth and Reconciliation National Event in Vancouver Sept 18 - 21, Residential School survivors who give their testimonies will be offered prayer shawls as a gift from the churches.  These shawls have been a very powerful and important symbol of reconciliation at past events particularly because of the importance of blankets and "blanketing" in West Coast traditional ceremony. Knitting a prayer shawl is a concrete way to be involved in the work of reconciliation. Here's a pattern - experienced knitters say that it takes them about a month of casual knitting and we need several hundred shawls so please begin right away. Bring completed shawls to your parish office for centralized pick-up later.

Things You'll Need

  •
Yarn
  •
Needles in a size appropriate for your yarn

Instructions

  1. Choose a soft, yet relatively bulky yarn when knitting prayer shawls. Keep care in mind. Many prayer shawls will be used for warmth and comfort in medical situations, so easy laundering is helpful. Use a needle size that yields a fabric with a nice drape.

  2. Cast on stitches in a multiple of 3. Choose the total number of stitches based on the final width desired. If you're using a bulky weight yarn, 57 stitches will work well. Add additional stitches for a lighter weight yarn.

  3.
Choose between several pattern options. The most traditional choice for a prayer shawl is a knit 3, purl 3 pattern to the end or row on every row. On the wrong side rows, you will be knitting the purls and purling the knit stitches. You can also opt for a knit 3, purl 3 rib pattern, a knit 3, purl 3 moss stitch pattern or work the entire shawl in seed stitch if you prefer. The number three has spiritual significance in many faiths and works well as a repeating, easily memorized pattern.

  4. Work to the desired length( 60 inches or 1 1/2 metres) and bind off loosely. Keep healing thoughts, prayers or blessings in mind as you work each stitch of the knit shawl. Be sure to add in yarn as needed mid-row to avoid visible ends on the edges of your hand knit prayer shawl. The prayer shawl should be long enough to wrap snugly and warmly around the shoulders.

  5.
Cut lengths of yarn to around 6 inches to make fringe. Use a simple slip knot to attach fringe to the ends of your prayer shawl. Add beads to the fringe if desired.

Trinity Sunday Sermon

From the Sunday, May 26, 2013 regional service, by Rev'd Elizabeth Mathers.

So, Trinity Sunday.  A day for celebration of the community and the creativity that lie at the heart of God - good things to celebrate as we gather for our fifth annual deanery worship.
The Trinity is, of course, a mystery to us; the Godhead is hidden from our sight.  But rather than approach it, as we might, as a theological puzzle - an intellectual wrestling with the concept of Three Persons and One God, or as an abstraction - something far removed from our daily life, I'd like to invite us to consider the Trinity as a gift that's offered to us to reflect on and live into, relationally and creatively, that draws us deeper into life as God's beloved daughters and sons,  whom Jesus calls friends, and who are enlivened by the Spirit's breathing into us.

Leadership School and Evangelism Event

Registration is now open for two great education events for lay people and clergy.

Leadership School

The School this year runs from Sunday July 21 through to  Saturday July 27 at Rosemary Heights. We are really looking forward to presenting Year B of the curriculum. Last summer’s school was very well received, so we have expanded enrolment this year to 50 participants. Parish teams are encouraged. Highlights of the program include parish visits, marketing, and power & politics. A brochure can be found here

Register online and then just send your cheque to Marnie at the Synod office. Cheques will be held here until April 30, which is the cut-off date for registration.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact either Marnie or Tasha.

Evangelism Event

One highlight of the Diocesan School for Leadership are the models of church, different frameworks that allow us to look at our congregations and assess them. The Gather-Transform-Send model forms the basis for the March 2nd workshop Everyday Evangelism. Focusing on the “inviting” section of Gather-Transform-Send, the Rev. Andrea McMillin (consultant in congregational development, Diocese of Olympia) will take us through exercises that will help us develop of clear picture of our parish’s identity and practical ways to talk about our churches. This is for people who have found themselves saying “We’re a welcoming church, but visitors don’t seem to return…” or “I love the Anglican Church; why don’t others know about us?”

This is an excellent way to introduce concepts from the School for Leadership to people who are uncertain about making a full week commitment. It will also be a good refresher for last year’s participants (and includes new material). Plus, $20 includes lunch and materials. The flyer is here, and you can register online.  Questions? Call Tasha 604-684-6309 x 227

Bonus: Everyday Evangelism is at the same time and place as the next Stewardship seminar, STEWARDSHIP: Communications & Hospitality.  Share the ride and exchange ideas on the way home.
